This tragically uplifting number evidently began life as a 'cowboy' song about the California Gold Rush and the people who died en route, seeking their fortune. It has since been morphed into a popular shape-note hymn. This particular arrangement was designed to be performed either as a duet or as a 'pipe-singing' arrangement, whereby the piper both sings and plays the harmony simultaneously.
