Iris Dement sang this uncommon version in the award-winning film, Songcatcher (2000). The original ballad is possibly British in its ancestry. (The film, as it happens, is set in the early 1900s, and portrays a musicologist who studies and collects Appalachian folk songs in western North Carolina.) Thanks to Travis Ritch for alerting me to this pipeable ballad melody.
